The Wowan/Dululu Multi-Purpose Centre Story

The Wowan/Dululu Multi-Purpose Centre (WDMPC) under of the auspice of the Wowan/Dululu Community Volunteer Group Inc. commenced operations in August, 1992. Due to the dedication and effort of community volunteers, the building which was once the old Wowan Police residence was relocated to its present position in Wowan and is now the Centre for many services offered to assist the community.

In June 1992, the Community Volunteer Group received an initial grant of $45,000 from the Department of Health, Housing & Community Services (now known as Department of Health and Ageing). Following receipt of this funding, a Co-ordinator was employed together with a Domiciliary Nurse and the Centre’s first cleaner. Today, the Centre employs 25 casual and part time staff and is one of the largest employers in the local area.

A wide range of services were offered to the community in 1993 that largely focused on assistance for the elderly. In addition, the first Doctor’s clinic was established during this period. Funding for Community Aged Care Packages was received by the Multi-Purpose Centre in 1994 followed by Home & Community Care funding from Queensland Health in 2000.

The Multi-Purpose Centre now facilitates a list of services, offering health clinics together with social and educational programs. The Centre serves the Central Queensland communities of Wowan, Dululu, Goovigen and Gogango and their surrounding areas which consists of approximately 1000 people.

The Wowan/Dululu Community Volunteer Group Inc. holds its meetings on the second Monday of every month at the Centre in Railway Avenue, Wowan, commencing at 4.00PM. New members are always welcome.
